A study of the wind effects on the tower was carried out by means of a wind tunnel test based on a proximity and pressure instrumented model. A structural load and differential pressure analysis was carried out, together with a pedestrian safety and comfort study and an aeroacoustic analysis of the tower cladding.

WIND STUDY EFFECTS ON THE RANDE BRIDGE

Pontevedra, Spain

The extension of the Rande Bridge involves the construction of two new access 706m-long, side decks on either side of the existing Bridge. The existing towers are extended to generate room for new cables connected to the new pin-joined decks. O&B carried the full wind engineering of the new bridge based on the testing of both sectional and full aeroelastic model. The study targeted the determination of the structures aerodynamic stability including the cables as well as the development of equivalent static loads.

WIND STUDY EFFECTS ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE RABAT BOUREGREG TOWER

Rabat, Morocco

The Rabat Bouregreg Tower is 250 meters high, with 55 floors, and covering an area of 86,000 m2. When completed, the tower will be the tallest in Africa. Oritia & Boreas has determined design wind loading and structural response study, with a plaza study of the tower and nearby surroundings to pedestrian comfort and security levels, façade design, landscape and urban planning. The study was based on pressure and balance model tests at the early state of design followed by a high resolution pressure model and a experimentally validated CFD model for detail analysis.

WIND STUDY EFFECTS ON THE TRAIN STATION OF RABAT

Rabat, Morocco

Oritia & Boreas has carried out a boundary layer wind tunnel test to quantify the wind loads. Based on a pressure model test, the design loads were calculated upon the instantaneous combination and integration of pressures on both upper and lower surfaces of the structure.

WIND STUDY EFFECTS ON THE SCULPTURE NORMAN FOSTER FOUNDATION

Madrid, Spain

The courtyard of the Norman Foster Foundation is the setting for the pavilion, a space designed by the Norman Foster Studio within the Norman Foster Foundation. The pavilion displays objects and audio visual materials of projects, places, people, sculptures and paintings that can inspire future visitors to the Foundation in the same way that they once inspired Norman Foster and his work. Oritia & Boreas has carried out the study of the differential loads and the structural response, based on a high resolution pressure model of the sculptural roof over the patio.

MULTIPURPOSE ACADEMIC WIND TUNNEL

Madrid, Spain

O&B has designed and built a Wind tunnel for the Universidad Europea de Madrid located in the Villaviciosa de Odón Campus. It is a Wind tunnel for teaching and applied demonstration for Civil and Aerospace Engineering with two closed test sections and closed recirculation air circuit. The high speed test section presents a square section of 900x900mm and the low speed test section has a section of 1800x1800mm. The turbomachine counts on nine blades with a diameter of 1600 mm and an engine power of 37 kW which is controlled by a variable-frequency drive.

STUDY OF PEDESTRIAN COMFORT AND SECURITY LEVELS, AT THE 37TH FLOOR OF THE SEVILLA TOWER

Sevilla, Spain

The Torre Seville will house the five-star Eurostars hotel on the last five floors, from the 25th floor to the 37th floor. The terrece on the 37th floor of the Torre Seville will also be used, which will have a lounge bar open to all citizens. Oritia & Boreas has carried out a study of pedestrian comfort and security levels, at the 37th floor. The study was supplemented with environmental monitoring of wind speed and direction at points of interest.


PLAZA STUDY OF THE TOWER AND NEARBY SURROUNDINGS OF THE SEVILLA TOWER

The Torre Seville shopping center will be structured as an open shopping center which will concentrate fashion, leisure and restoration in a large urban space and it will be located on the two podiums at the foot of the Torre Seville, with three and four heights respectively. Oritia & Boreas has carried out a plaza study of the tower and nearby surroundings to pedestrian comfort and security levels, façade design, landscape and urban planning. The study was supplemented with environmental monitoring of wind speed and direction at points of interest.

Wind dynamic effects study with numerical analysis (CFD) of the phenomena of vortex shedding and aeroelastic instabilities. Oritia & Boreas has also carried out the analysis of the wind effects and study of wind mitigation barriers.


WIND EFFECTS STUDY ON THE GREAT THEATRE OF CASABLANCA

Casablanca, Morocco

Grand Theatre of Casablanca (CasArts) will represent a symbol of the cultural and artistic renovation of the economic capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. Oritia & Boreas has carried out the study of the differential loads and the structural response in building envelope modules taking as a basis a high resolution pressure model and a detail study of the façade elements with models of pressure and test of elements in real scale.


WIND EFFECTS STUDY ON THE FIFTH TOWER IN MADRID

Madrid, Spain

The 'Fifth Tower' project of about 161m of height is located in the district of the four towers of Madrid, at the northern end of Paseo de la Castellana. Oritia & Boreas has carried out the analysis of the wind effects to determine global structural loads and dynamic response from a high resolution pressure model, the detail analysis of equivalent static distributed loads and local wind pressures on the façade elements and an additional plaza study of the tower and nearby surroundings to pedestrian comfort and security levels, façade design, landscape and urban planning.

STUDY OF WIND EFFECTS IN THE SQUARE OF BBVA HEADQUARTERS

Madrid, Spain

The new headquarters, which is called BBVA City, is made up of seven horizontal buildings arranged around a large square in which stands a 93-meter-high tower which is the main building of the complex. Oritia & Boreas has carried out the comfort and pedestrian safety studies performed from boundary layer wind tunnel measurements of the speeds at pedestrian height. The study was supplemented with environmental monitoring of the wind speed and direction at points of interest.

WIND FIELDS ANALYSIS OF THE MOJAVE SOLAR PLANT

Barstow, California

Located at 150 kilometres northeast of Los Angeles, Mojave is a parabolic trough technology solar plant of 280 MW in 714 hectares. Oritia & Boreas has carried out the analysis of the records of the anemometric network installed for wind fields determination and validation with precise numerical models, studying the security protocols optimization and park closure procedures.

NOOR III SOLAR TOWER

Uarzazate, Morocco

The NOOR III phase of the Uarzazate Solar Power Station (Morocco) consists of a 250m tall central solar tower surrounded by a park of reflectors. Slender cylindrical structures, such as the NOOR III tower, are usually dynamically sensitive to wind and require special consideration.

Oritia & Boreas performed a full aeroelastic wind tunnel study of the central tower to determine the wind induced structural loading for design, along with an analysis of the aeroelastic stability of the tower up to and beyond maximum wind speeds expected at the site.

TUNED MASS DAMPER (TMD) ALMONTE RIVER BRIDGE

Cáceres, Spain

This study is a continuation of O&B involvement throughout the design and construction of the high-speed rail bridge crossing the Almonte River.

In this project, Oritia & Boreas collaborated with the constructor for assessing the design performance characteristics of a prototype TMD which was to be installed on the provisional cables used in the construction of the 350m arched span.

O&B designed and constructed a purpose built test-bench for capturing the response of the TMD to harmonic excitation, leading to an assessment of the TMD effective damping and design recommendations.

 

HISGAURA BRIDGE

Santander-Boyaca, Colombia

The 420m cable-stayed bridge is located at the border between the Santander and Báyaca departments, Colombia. The bridge crosses a valley of some 130m and is surrounded by relatively complex topography from all sides.

Section model tests were performed in the wind tunnel for assessing the equivalent static design loads and analysis of the aerodynamic stability.

HONDA BRIDGE

Tolima, Colombia

The Honda Bridge is located in the Tolima department of Colombia, crossing the Magdalena River. The central span of the cable-stayed bridge is 250m.

Oritia & Boreas investigated the aerodynamic stability and reported the equivalent static design loads of the bridge based on section model tests in the wind tunnel.

“ALGECIRAS SAFEPORT” METEO-OCEANIC RISK MANAGEMENT IN HARBOUR ENVIRONMENTS - PHASE I

Cádiz, Spain

O&B was leader in an R&D project for developing a set of guidelines towards certifying the Harbour Meteorological-Ocean Risk Management System. The study was completed in partnership with the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of University of Cantabria (IH Cantabria); and the Harbour Research Laboratory (HRL) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid.


The project included the expansion of the ocean-meteorological monitoring network (wind, waves, agitation and currents) of the Algeciras Port Authority; development of wind/wave predictive modelling systems; a user orientated website of real-time publication of environmental data to aid in decision-making

 

WIND TUNNEL STUDY ON AERODYNAMIC OPTIMIZATION OF BRIDGE RAILINGS

 Constitution Bridge, Cadiz.

At deck height the cable-stayed bridge is exposed to relatively strong Atlantic winds, giving extra importance in the aerodynamic design of the lateral windshield railings.

Wind tunnel tests were performed on a large-scale section model to measure the static force coefficients on the railing system, combined with modal finite element analysis for providing wind loading and design recommendations.

FULL AEROELASTIC WIND TUNNEL STUDY OF CONSTITUTION BRIDGE


Cádiz, Spain

Constitution Bridge is the longest and highest span cable-stayed bridge in Spain and the third largest in Europe, with a total length of 3082m, main span of 540m and deck height of 69m.

A full aeroelastic wind tunnel study was performed to examine the dynamic response and aerodynamic stability of the completed bridge, and to identify wind speeds associated to possible flutter instability and vortex shedding induced oscillations.

WIND TUNNEL STUDY OF TORRE CASTELLANA 77, MADRID


Madrid, Spain.

An additional four levels were added to an existing 97m tower located in the centre of Madrid (Paseo de la Castellana Nº77).

Pressure model tests were performed in the boundary layer wind tunnel for defining the structural loading distribution on the updated building design.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF AN OFFSHORE METEOROLOGICAL MAST

Moray Firth and Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farms, North Sea, Scotland.

Structural design of an offshore metal lattice mast that was installed in the North Sea (Scotland) with a total height of 85m above deck.

Oritia & Boreas were responsible for the dynamic wind loading analysis via creation of synthetic wind velocity time series and DNV certified structural design of the metal lattice tower with a novel telescopic erection procedure.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING ON AN OFFSHORE SEAWALL


Algeciras Port Authority, Spain

Expansion of the Algeciras Port Authority (APBA) environmental monitoring network with the installation of meteorological sensors on the Isla Verde offshore seawall.

Oritia & Boreas were responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of the new stations for real-time publication on the APBA and national port authority websites.

The study included pressure model tests in the boundary layer wind tunnel for determining the structural response on individual elements and the accumulated loading on the central control mechanism.

FIELD MONITORING OF AEOLIAN SAND TRANSPORT

Remote monitoring of environmental conditions and sand transport for improving safety of the national high-speed train network in arid regions.

Oritia & Boreas were responsible for the installation and maintenance of a remove monitoring station and study of sand transport over a prolonged period; and the development of a meso-meteorological sand transport predictive tool to aid in decision making of the railway network management.

The tunnel is a valuable tool for studying how various climatic variables, including wind circulation, interact with the intrusion and emission of gas contaminants in the subsoil.

The project was partially funded by the US Defence Ministry and will be a valuable tool for forwarding humanitarian aid.
